Civic Engagement Manager
Karely De La Cruz has been shaped by a multifaceted upbringing across Tijuana, South Los Angeles, and Compton, and has been deeply rooted in community work from a young age. Her early passion for activism led her to engage in grassroots initiatives focused on supporting marginalized individuals and families, particularly those facing housing insecurity.
After earning her degree in Criminal Justice from Cal State Dominguez Hills, Karely committed herself to addressing the challenges intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. She became a vital part of mutual aid efforts that provided eviction prevention support and essential services to vulnerable communities during crisis moments.
As the Civic Engagement Manager at T.R.U.S.T. South LA, Karely plays a central role in empowering residents through advocacy and direct support. She was instrumental in helping secure $6.4 million in rental and utility assistance through the state rental assistance program, aiding over 1,000 individuals and families. Her dedication extended to supporting the Measure ULA campaign, which successfully introduced a tax on luxury property sales in Los Angeles to fund housing solutions. Through this initiative, she helped deliver over $50,000 in rental assistance to families across LA and supported community members in applying for the ULA Income Support Program under the Homelessness Prevention Program.
Karely continues to bridge the gap between residents and critical resources such as rental aid and legal support, ensuring access to stable housing and financial relief. Her unwavering belief that housing is a human right drives her ongoing work in tenant protections, civic engagement, and community-led solutions.
Deeply connected to the struggles of working-class families, Karely channels her lived experience into meaningful advocacy. Through her involvement in spaces like Compton Rising, Compton Tenants Union, and East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, she uplifts efforts for housing justice, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Karely remains steadfast in her mission to dismantle oppressive systems and uplift historically disenfranchised communities with a commitment to empowerment and inclusivity.
