Covid Vaccine Event and Free Food Distribution

Last June 13th and 27th, T.R.U.S.T. South L.A. in partnership with Esperanza Housing Community held a free vaccination drive for its community members at its office to help curb the spread of Covid 19. A Taco food truck was on-site to provide free meals and free groceries were distributed to all that came for a vaccine. On top of the free food and vaccines, brand new bikes courtesy of Superpedestrian, were raffled off to all the new members that signed up with TRUST. It was a day of fun and activities as community members lined up to get their vaccines.

T.R.U.S.T. South L.A. joined the Filmmaking and Social Justice Project

We had the opportunity to participate in the Filmmaking and Social Justice Project to continue exploring how visual storytelling is an important part of community organizing. We were able to host a short video screening for our community members, showcasing their testimony and the collective impact we are having in South LA.

This project was a collaboration with Aura Vasquez auravasquezofficial , founder of Ready to Help: Mutual Aid and Community Network, screenwriters Phil Walker walkerwire , and Maxwell Kessler manuels_mane_of_justice , as well as Teresa Flores, notteresa an Artist in Residence for the City of Los Angeles. The project was made possible through the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Artist-in-Residence Program culture_la . It is with their support that we can continue to elevate our stories.

Last Friday we had our first tenant meeting with our newest residents of the LA CLT pilot program at our Bonnie Brea building. Together we oriented them into TRUST as one of five community land trusts part of this pilot program in LA county—highlighting our goal to help our community have quality, stable housing and self-determination.

This is the first of many resident meetings towards supporting these residents, some of who have lived here and rented over a quarter of a century, into one day forming a cooperative ownership structure. This multifamily building is located in the heavily gentrified Pico-Union neighborhood, just a few blocks away from L.A. Live and U.S.C.

Thank you to all who made this moment happen, it’s only the beginning! Thank you to the Los Angeles County Development Authority for administering the CLT Pilot program. Thank you, Supervisor Hilda Solis, Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, Supervisor Janice Hahn, and Supervisor Kathryn Barger, for championing this pilot program.

The acquisition of Reclamar la Tierra could also not have been possible without the collective work with our allies in this pilot program Fideicomiso Comunitario Tierra Libre, Liberty Community Land Trust, The El Sereno Community Land Trust, and Beverly Vermont Community Land Trust.
