Community Land Trusts and Black History
The first community land trust in the United States was established by a community of African American Civil Rights Leaders in 1969. New Communities Inc., a 5,700 acre land trust and farm collective was created to secure greater economic and political independence for African American farmers and their families during the Southern Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
