For the Community
Slauson and Wall Project Update

We did it! Last month (August 2020), in partnership with Clifford Beers Housing, the LA Neighborhood Land Trust, and other key team members, we submitted a community centered Request for Proposal (RFP) for Slauson & Wall marking over 10 years of T.R.U.S.T.’s efforts to ensure the 7-acre lot is built by and for the community. Here is a brief message from our teammate, Gabriela Nuñez, “just for my entire life, this part of Slauson has always been factories and unsafe streets and basically bad for families and its sort of amazing to be working for an organization [T.R.U.S.T. South LA] that is proposing something so beautiful and community-centered."

Next Steps: The Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department will complete their evaluations of proposals and recommendations to the Mayor and City Council by October 2020. Stay tuned!

Food Voucher Program

T.R.U.S.T. South LA has been working with the LA Food Policy Council to provide South LA residents with $50 fresh food credits at a local South LA convenience store, El Principio! The program was rolled out in response to the food insecurity caused by Covid-19 and its aim is to assure South LA families have consistent access to rest fruits and vegetables. T.R.U.S.T. South LA and LA Food Policy Council will enroll 30 South LA residents in this program!

About 1 in 5 renters in Los Angeles County have paid their rent late or missed a rental payment since the start of the pandemic, a study released jointly by UCLA and USC on Monday shows. While an eviction moratorium remains in place, the study found that around 40,000 L.A. County tenants reported that their landlords started the eviction process, even though they can’t legally be forced out.
